UNLV basketball:

Rebels in and around the program had a wild ride during Rice saga

Mountain West Conference Tournament - UNLV vs. Wyoming

Sam Morris / Las Vegas Sun

UNLV coach Dave Rice calls out a play during their Mountain West Conference tournament game against Wyoming on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV won the game 71-67.

For most people it came out of nowhere, and Dave Rice’s flirtation with South Florida had more twists and turns than most relationships can muster in the first 24 hours.

By the time we went to bed on Friday night, or early Saturday morning as the case may be, it seemed like UNLV’s coach was going to get what he wanted — more time and more financial commitment from UNLV — to stay right where he wanted. But up until that point, and until it became official Saturday afternoon, there was a lot to sort out.

And while trying to get the simple truth out of Twitter may not be the best plan, that’s where a lot of fans, current and future Rebels turned to keep up with the saga. Here’s a glance at the roller coaster in real time, from the first mention of Rice’s potential departure to the university’s decision to propose a two-year extension that keeps him at UNLV until 2018-19.
