Regarding the story, “Suicide in school: District’s prevention effort leads to student hospitalizations”:

The fact that the Clark County School District is taking action against the possibility of teen suicide and self-harm is commendable. With the number of adolescents suffering such traumas rising and mortality rates escalating, the school district is displaying impressive attentiveness and response to this issue.

Many ignore or brush off mental illness and depression as attention-seeking dramatics, but self-harm and thoughts of suicide must be acted upon as a serious issue. It is often disregarded, even by the teens themselves, so raising awareness is the most important step toward lowering teen suicide rates. Many lives could be saved if more school districts took simple actions to educate and support the teen who is too afraid to seek it due to mental isolation.
