LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Ways to show we’re American

In response to, “The meaning of being an American”:

Being American means that I can contribute to help form a more perfect union for my children and grandchildren, even though doors have been closed.

I can help establish justice by voting.

I can insure domestic tranquility by being a good patriot and role model. I have provided for the common defense of my country by being an honorable U.S. Navy veteran.

I have honestly tried to promote the general welfare by volunteering my time to many political, church and social causes.

I can secure the blessings of liberty to myself and my posterity by standing up for truthfulness, caring, honesty, responsibility and integrity.

Being American means that I can be judged by the “content of my character,” rather than the color of my skin.

  1. We can show we are Americans by service to others and volunteering our time, talent and treasures to make this world a better place for all.

  2. Why don't you just show your patriotism by displaying an American flag at your house, buying only "Made in U.S.A." whenever possible and helping your fellow Americans who are less fortunate than you are.

  3. The car industry is a consumer driven market and industry. Americans bought the Japanese and German imports, now made here, because they were better in price, performance, and power than the American union made car makes and models. That's changed now. Why? Because the big 3 lost market share to the foreign imports and reformed their plants, products, and practices to compete. That's the American way: Competition. It's the same reason [competition] that Americans buy gas engine vehicles and not hybrids and plug-ins. Even with Government subsidizing the latter with tax money and tax credits. Eventually that will change [more demand for the clean air emissions' cars]. And the US makers may actually meet the 3 percent goal of new car sales in their product fleets for hybrids and plug-ins by 2025. But so far, American consumers are not.
