Letter to the editor:

Metro has far too many bad apples

Sheriff Doug Gillespie’s opinion piece, “What the public does not know about Metro,” on Aug. 7 was pure tripe. The sheriff blames the “few” bad apples in Metro Police on luck — what you get when you dip into the pool of the human race. What he doesn’t acknowledge is that the philanthropic, generous, selfless souls mentioned in his article are not unique to Metro. Any company or government department the size of Metro will generate a similar number of like stories.

So what are we left with, then? Is the sheriff bad at logic, statistics and an understanding of human nature? Or is he trying to distract us from the real problem? Why are there more days of negative news about Metro in the paper over the course of a week than not? Now, an officer is accused of sexually harassing women under the color of authority and officers are accused of falsifying police reports and assaulting people on New Year’s.

What it sounds like to me is there are more than a few bad stories. And cops. And this is what our most important police official chooses to write about?

Until Metro’s house is in order, I will not support a tax increase. Fix the problems and you’ll have support, Sheriff Gillespie.
