Letter to the editor:

Higher pay for Congress? No way

The online comment from “fosimmons” about congressional pay that appeared in the Aug. 4 paper says that a higher salary would attract better candidates, something that this country obviously needs.

However, people don’t enter politics for the compensation but rather for the power. So many in Congress are already millionaires; will an extra $165,200 really make a difference? I think not.

Does money really attract the best? Just look at our schools if you think so. Our school system has the lowest rating in the country.

So for the believers who think it’s all about money, one would then assume that our teachers must be the lowest paid in the country.

Would hiring better-paid teachers make them more dedicated? Probably not any more than paying members of Congress more money.
