Regarding the story in Monday’s paper, “Memorial’s sculptor returns to strike controversial quote from piece,” about the sculptor who removed a contentious phrase from a memorial for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:
I see the controversy; however, it could have been easily solved simply and appropriately by changing the quote “I was” to the non-quote “He was.”
This would have been saying exactly what Dr. King had suggested we should say if we wanted to call him a drum major. A great big deal was made out of nothing.
