letter to the editor:

The real meaning of immigration reform

To most Americans, immigration reform is about ending costly and destructive mass illegal immigration. It does not mean granting amnesty and U.S. citizenship to foreigners who have broken our labor, tax, identity theft, and immigration laws.

Immigration reform does not mean flooding our country with low-skilled foreign workers to compete for scarce jobs with unemployed Americans.

Ron Nelson’s July 29 letter to the editor, “Business helped by immigration reform,” was misleading.

The Congressional Budget Office has concluded the result of the Gang of Eight bill that Nelson apparently supports would be to depress wages of working Americans and increase the unemployment rate. It would lower the per-capita share of GNP and cause interest rates to rise over the next 20 years. I do agree that a mandatory E-Verify system is needed to stop unscrupulous business owners from knowingly employing immigrants in the country illegally.
