Letter to the editor:

Don’t be so quick to say race is issue

Debbie Starr’s July 30 letter to the editor, “America has not seen last of racism,” provides a noble and reasonable request that “whites have to listen open-mindedly,” but such a conversation with her is doomed to failure because she refuses to have an open mind.

She ends her letter by asserting that racism still exists and “the best example is the lack of respect for our first black president, a president that I support 100 percent.”

By her logic (or illogic), someone cannot disagree with the president for other reasons (e.g., continued high unemployment rates, refusal to secure the borders, failure to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay as he promised, use of “drones”).

Open-minded discussion is definitely needed, and that includes people of all races accepting that other people might disagree with you because of your statements and actions rather than the color of your skin.
