Letter to the editor:

Sandoval not doing what’s best for us

If you were to look at the number of Nevada residents who have moved here in the past 13 years, I think you will find the majority of us moved here from places where we paid federal income taxes, state income taxes, and sometimes a city income and business tax.

I was raised in Michigan and in my mid-20s opened my first of five companies. I paid all the taxes mentioned above plus payroll taxes. If you have lived in a state that has an income tax, you tend to care who the governor is and what you hope he’ll do for all the state’s citizens.

Living in Nevada for the past 15 years, I find not having a state income tax or inheritance estate tax can make it very easy to say “I don’t care” whom the Nevada governor is now or ever.

In the past four years, Gov. Brian Sandoval has spent time with Mitt Romney to help the Republican Party but didn’t meet with President Barack Obama on behalf of Nevadans.

I would have liked to see our governor go after federal funding available to help our state and people. That would mean Sandoval would have to care for what is best for all of Nevada, right?

With better than 80 percent of the state’s residents wanting some form of gun registration, he says no.

Further, this governor keeps our Legislature in session longer so he can have two bills he wants passed: a bill for Spanish-speaking children to learn English and a bill or two for Metro Police.

I do not want to guess Sandoval’s motives, but neither of these bills best serves this state’s most urgent needs. So the future of employment and education be damned; let’s keep the labor skills low, thus keeping the state’s hourly wage low.

Also, our city streets will be safer now that Metro can hire more cops — maybe ones who admit they can make mistakes and do not make it a habit of shooting first.

I guess I do care about this state, but I don’t care about its governor/government.
