Letter to the editor:

Reassess signal times on Flamingo

Jackie Valley’s article “Driving into the danger zone” noted that “of the top 10 most dangerous intersections in Las Vegas, four involve Flamingo Road.”

I’ve lived here for more than 30 years, and that 40 percent figure for Flamingo stood out.

In the distant past, the goal of traffic control was always to keep the Strip and the major cross streets (Tropicana, Flamingo, Desert Inn, Sahara, Charleston) flowing.

I avoid Flamingo at all costs. It doesn’t take one long to realize that if you miss the light, you will be sitting there for a long time. That’s why people rush to make it through the intersections.

With more than 400 traffic cameras looking at all the intersections in Las Vegas, perhaps it would be good for traffic control to reassess the traffic light times on Flamingo. This should be done during rush and nonrush hours to perhaps have the lights functioning for different lengths of time during heavy traffic hours to keep traffic flowing.

Hopefully, this simple suggestion will be noted and perhaps save some accidents and lives.
