We’ve all heard from Gov. Mitt Romney and the Republican chorus about how the Obama administration has ended the job requirement for welfare clients. It’s not true.

What happened is that several states, including Nevada, asked about waivers on some of the requirements imposed on them for dealing with people on welfare.

The states thought a more flexible approach would be better.

In a letter from the Health and Human Services Department to the governors, it states in part: “The secretary is only interested in approving waivers if the state can explain in compelling fashion why the proposed approach may be a more efficient or effective means to promote employment entry, retention, advancement, or access to jobs that offer opportunities for earnings and advancement that will allow participants to avoid dependence on government benefits.”

How Romney and the Republicans read this as ending the job requirement is baffling.
