The Bishop Gorman High football team is ranked in the top-15 of three national polls this week following a 27-22 victory last Friday against then-No. 9 Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Good Counsel is the three-time defending Maryland state champions, has 14 players with Division I scholarship offers and entered with a 13-game winning streak. In the ESPN2 televised game, Gorman needed just six plays to score on its initial drive and opened a 19-point lead in the third quarter.

The performance clearly caught the eye of officials who compile the rankings.

USA Today, whose high school rankings are widely considered the most prestigious, ranked Gorman at No. 11 and dropped Good Counsel 11 spots to No. 20. Last week, Gorman wasn’t ranked.

“It’s a nice reward for the kids, but at the end of the day, it’s still the first week of the season,” Gorman coach Tony Sanchez said.

In the Sports Illustrated rankings, Gorman moved up 15 places from No. 23 to No. 8. Maxpreps.com pushed Gorman up one slot from No. 11 to 10.

The Gaels’ ranking could be at risk this week. They face the tough task of traveling to Hawaii to take on respected St. Louis High.
