Coroner identifies man, 19, who drowned in Lake Mead

A 19-year-old Las Vegas man who drowned Sunday in Echo Bay at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area was identified today as Spencer Gaston, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

National Park Service spokesman Andrew Muñoz said search and rescue crews found Gaston’s body about 4 p.m. in about 12 feet of water.

Gaston apparently drowned after getting tangled in underwater vegetation, Muñoz said.

Friends alerted authorities about the situation when Gaston disappeared. A friend told authorities he was last seen about 12:30 p.m. in ankle-deep water.

Park rangers do not suspect foul play or drug and alcohol use, Muñoz said. He wasn't wearing a life jacket.

Park rangers and the Metro Police search and rescue dive team participated in the search.
