Careless smoking blamed in weekend apartment complex fire

Map

Fire investigators have determined careless smoking caused an apartment complex fire Saturday in the western valley that displaced about 10 residents, officials said today.

Clark County firefighters responded about 3 p.m. to The Resort at the Lakes apartment homes in the 9000 block of West Katie Avenue to battle the blaze. The fire, which affected three units, caused about $250,000 in damage.

County fire spokeswoman Stacey Welling said the fire started on an outdoor patio unit and spread to an attic. An occupant had been smoking on the patio before the fire started.

The blaze was ruled accidental, caused by careless discarding of smoking materials, Welling said.

Two neighboring units sustained smoke and water damage. Firefighters were able to rescue two dogs and two cats. No one was injured.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, almost 1,000 people die each year in home fires in the United States caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials.
