Fire displaces multiple residents of apartment complex

A fire that is suspected to have started in a single apartment displaced eight to 10 residents and damaged three units Saturday afternoon.

Clark County Fire spokeswoman Stacey Welling said firefighters responded to The Resort at the Lakes Apartment homes in the 9000 block of West Katie Avenue at around 3 p.m.

“There was heavy smoke from an upstairs unit,” said Welling. “The fire spread into the attic and that generated a two-alarm response.”

About 65 firefighters were on scene and contained the fire, but not before two other units got smoke and water damage. Fire fighters were able to rescue two dogs and two cats. In total the fire caused about $250,000 worth of damage.

Apartment management worked to place displaced residents in other units and the Red Cross was at the scene providing food and clothing, according to Welling.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
