Construction on the next phase of improvements to Sunset Park has begun, limiting access points to the popular recreation area.

Crews have closed two of the park’s entrances: the northern entrance from Eastern Avenue and the entrance at McLeod Drive from Sunset Road.

The other park entrances remain open for now, Clark County officials said.

The $11.7 million project will improve 75 of the park’s 375 acres, primarily the area surrounding the lake.

The project includes a walking loop around the lake with exercise stations, lake-edge lighting, a new pedestrian plaza next to the lake, a remodeled boat dock, a new playground and improved picnic shade structures.

While construction will close some parts of the park, much of the area will remain open and the ball fields, basketball courts and disc golf course will not be greatly affected.

The annual Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival will be relocated to the Silver Bowl Park, near Sam Boyd Stadium, this year since the festival’s usual home will be under construction. The festival is scheduled to take place Oct. 7 to 9.

The project is scheduled to be complete in late 2012.
