Fatal shooting

Two men have been arrested in the August killing of a 28-year-old woman in Las Vegas -- and shooting that left the woman's 12-year-old daughter critically injured.

The FBI and officials in California helped Metro detectives track down and arrest Willie Darnell Mason, 27, and David James Burns, 19. The two men have been charged with murder with a deadly weapon, burglary with a weapon, robbery with a weapon and conspiracy, police said.

Police said shortly before 4 a.m. Aug. 7, the two men allegedly knocked on the door of the victim’s apartment in the 5600 block of Meikle Lane and immediately began shooting after the door was opened.

Derecia Newman was killed. Her 12-year-old daughter was shot in the stomach and remains in critical condition at University Medical Center, police said.

Mason is being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bail. Burns is awaiting extradition from San Bernardino to Las Vegas.
