Palo Verde defense keys shutout victory against Centennial

Team pages

The Palo Verde High football team held host Centennial to less than 50 yards Thursday in a 21-0 Northwest Division victory.

“I think our defense is overlooked,” Palo Verde coach Darwin Rost said. “Centennial is no slouch. To hold a team with all of the fast backs they have is an accomplishment.”

Brandon Wright led Palo Verde with 181 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 26 carries. His 4-yard touchdown run toward the end of the first half gave the Panthers the lead for good.

“We moved the ball well (early). We just couldn’t put it in,” Rost said. “They checked Brandon a little bit. He was getting 8 or 9 yards a carry but couldn’t get a long run.”

Jonathan Maxwell had nine carries for 53 yards with a 20-yard touchdown for Palo Verde (4-0, 2-0 Northwest). Garrett Rost added three carries for 43 yards, and Chaisson Prescott completed two of three passes for 28 yards.

Rost said his team held Centennial to 17 rushing yards and 22 passing yards on two completions. Taj Cole, Centennial’s feature running back and one of top backs in the city, had eight carries for minus-4 yards, Rost said.
