Las Vegas Sun reporters Case Keefer and Ray Brewer break down the first week of high school football games and look ahead to this Friday's gridiron action.
Brett Van Orden had two touchdowns Friday night for the Eldorado High football team in a 32-19 victory against visiting Coroando in the season opener for both schools.
Van Orden’s 44-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the third quarter was one of two defensive scores for the Sundevils. They also limited Coronado to a pair of field goals on three possessions inside the Eldorado 5-yard line.
Patrick Hall's 65-yard interception return for a touchdown was Eldorado’s other defensive touchdown, helping first-year coach Vernon Brown get a win in his debut. The win also equaled the Sundevils’ win total last fall.
“The kids were pumped up. It was a good thing to see,” Brown said. “The kids came into the game confident and this shows them that we have a good team. Morale is up.”
Van Orden’s other touchdown was a 23-yard reception from quarterback JaQuorrey Williams, who added more than 100 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Eldorado’s next game is Sept. 11 against Silverado, one of the Sunrise Region’s top teams.
“We told the kids to stay humble,” Brown said.
