Metro identifies officer who fired at man Tuesday

Officer-involved shooting

Jackie Valley

Metro Police blocked off a portion of Linn Lane in the northeast valley after a police officer shot once at a man who allegedly made a threatening motion toward him during a domestic violence incident Tuesday morning.

A Metro Police officer who shot at a man Tuesday morning was identified today as Sgt. Curtis Willis.

Willis, 46, has been with the department since September 1990. He is assigned to the Patrol Division in Metro's Northeast Area Command, officials said.

Police responded Tuesday to a report of domestic violence involving a knife at 11:22 a.m. at 908 Linn Lane, which is near the intersection of Christy Lane and Bonanza Road, police said. When officers arrived, they said they saw Jeff Burguin, 48 – who had blood on him – run from a trailer in the yard to another residence.

Willis fired a single shot after Burguin moved his hands to reach into his waistband and rapidly moved his hand forward, police said, as if he was drawing a weapon. Officers told the man to get on the ground, police said, but Burguin didn’t obey.

Police said the bullet didn't strike Burguin and no officers were injured.

Burguin was arrested Tuesday in connection with felony domestic violence and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, police said.
