Officer-involved shooting

A Metro Police officer fired his weapon at a man Tuesday morning after responding to a domestic violence incident in the northeast Las Vegas Valley.

Police said the bullet did not hit Jeff Burguin, 48, who was treated for pre-existing injuries at the scene and not taken to a hospital. No officers were injured. The officer who fired his weapon will be identified 48 hours after the incident.

Burguin was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, police said. The victim was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Authorities responded to a report of domestic violence involving a knife at 11:22 a.m. at 908 Linn Lane, which is near the intersection of Christy Lane and Bonanza Road, police said.

Officers arrived and noticed Burguin running from a travel trailer in the yard to the rear of an adjacent residence, police said.

Officers saw that Burguin had blood on him and told him to show his hands and get on the ground, police said. He refused to comply, reached to his rear waistband and rapidly moved his hand forward as if drawing a weapon, police said.

One officer fired a single shot, but Burguin was not hit by the bullet, police said.

Metro Lt. George Castro said investigators were trying to determine whether Burguin was armed.

Castro said Metro’s new Force Investigative Team responded to the officer-involved shooting along with the Critical Incident Review Team, which looks at the administrative side of such incidents. FIT, announced by Sheriff Doug Gillespie after the coroner’s inquest into the death of Erik Scott, is a team of homicide detectives that will respond to any use of force incident — not just shootings.
