UPDATED STORY: Coroner identifies 18-year-old woman killed in crash
A woman died in a two-vehicle crash this afternoon at Blue Diamond Road and South Fort Apache after her car collided with another car.
Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Joseph Fackrell said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened at about 4:10 p.m. He said a man in the other car was taken to University Medical Center with unknown injuries.
Troopers are investigating the crash, but don't know which direction each vehicle was traveling, Fackrell said.
Blue Diamond Road, which had been closed, was reopened to traffic about 8 p.m., authorities said.

What is going on with all of these deaths out on Las Vegas roads? Are people just driving like maniacs or what? We must have the highest city street death rate in the southwest right now..
Rest in peace...
Please, everyone be careful on the roads out there.
Yeah, Environprotector that would be an interesting stat to have. Everyday at least one or more get it on our streets. All we can do is buckle up, drive cautiously, and hope and pray our number isn't up. Also, I believe Las Vegas rates very high with the number of drunk drivers on the road at any given time. There are a lot of unguided missiles out there.
That area was real bad a few years back during the housing boom. No traffic lights back than, on single lane roads, the death toll out there was much higher.
@environprotector....really??? I've been here 10 years and came from the D.C. Metro area but I've seen more body bags at traffic accidents here than I saw in 30 years in D.C. This is a scary place for motorists.
I come from the City also - Dupont Circle. The fact is DC streets were built for horse and buggies, no left hand turn lanes, no 4 lane streets and impossible with the traffic to work up a head of steam over 20 miles an hour. Of course, their are more accidents here with our marvelous road system plus 2 million live in Vegas and its 700,000 in the City. No comparison at all.

Thanks Todd, that's not self-serving at all.
I did not know the crash occured near where I live. How terrible. I have only lived here for 3 years.
Coming from california, it seems there are more crazy drivers here. People on their cell phones, driving over the speed limit with one hand on the steering wheel.
Half the time the drivers are not looking straight ahead of them, they are usually talking to the person in the passenger seat or are doing something else besides driving. Where are the police to pull these guys over and cite them with a ticket.
Nowhere?
The driving in this town is out of control. 2 or 3 cars in a row will run a red light after it changes. Every time I look at another driver who guns it past me they are talking on their cell phone. And I just love it when out of nowhere the car in front of me hits their brakes and makes a right turn into a check cashing place without using their turn signal.
i drive around the city for my company i work for in my 9 year i have once had a accident i see stupid ignorant driver out there it scary. people on phone people try to beat the orange traffic light
Perry, In 9 yrs have you gotten your eyes checked? Someday you might mistake an orange for a lemon.
To Juanie, I have been here for many years and I have news for you, most of the craZY drivers in this city came straight from California. So get over your bad self.
Condolences to the family of the woman who died.
I have to agree with vc... I have been here almost 3 years now. When I moved here, I mentioned how terrible the drivers were and all my co-workers said "look at the plates, they will always be from CA". Now when someone does something wildly ignorant while driving, I look, and 8 times out of 10, it's California plates... Horrific drivers! The other 2 times it's an elderly driver...
As more immigrants move here from Mexifornia, along with them comes their bad driving habits. No surprise why our insurance rates are so high..
Was she driving a toyota?
That girls name was Monica Maple....she was a very smart and beautiful girl and one of the sweetest people you would have ever met and on top of that one of my really good friends! all because her life ended in a car accident doesnt mean she was a ditzy girl that talked or texted on the phone while driving. MONICA WILL BE MISSED!
The drivers in Las Vegas are definitely worse than anywhere else. I've lived here for 7 years and I can not understand why Vegas's motor cycle cops mostly sit on easy pickin's radar streets that have no reported accidents. Patrolling more dangerous locations would seem like the more prudent thing to do.
Alta between Hualapi and Rampart is the #1 radar trap in the entire state and not one reported injury accident in over 5 years.
There are way too many fatal accidents on this short stretch of road on Blue Diamond. From Fort Apache road to El Capitan road, which is about one mile, I have seen three fatalities in less than two years.
Does anyone know where I can find traffic accident statistics for Las Vegas. I want to find information about fatal accidents on Blue Diamond road.
Either the speed limit on Blue Diamond between Durango and Fort Apache needs to be lowered to 45, or the road needs to be widened (I believe this is in the works eventually). Every day I have to hit the brakes on Blue Diamond as cars from El Capitan pull out into 55 MPH traffic and don't get up to speed, or drivers unfamiliar with the area (and usually on the phone) slam on the brakes as they nearly miss their turn off Blue Diamond. The "turn only" lane from westbound Blue Diamond to northbound Durango also needs better signage.
Also interesting that the Google map accompanying this story shows Fort Apache continuing to Serene south of Blue Diamond. Only if you like off-roading (and I've seen a few people who did).
that intersection needs a traffic signal but won't get one probably until the south part of Ft. Apache is built which with the homes not being built as they were in that area it probably won't be for years now. the issue is people do just pull out and expect oncoming traffic to slow down to accommodate them when that is NOT the way it works...they are supposed to wait until there is plenty of room before they pull out, oncoming vehicles' speed should not have to alter (slow) or stop for them but seems everyone that has moved to Vegas doesn't know this rule...they just pull out like bgrebs said above and expect the other driver to have enough time to not him them and slow down. Blue Diamond is a highway, it leads to Pahrump, the speed is fine as is, you can't make anything fail safe if people won't follow the rules, period.
In responce to by vc I have to agree with juanie about the drivers out here. I lived in cali my whole life and I used to think ca had the worst drivers until I moved to las vagas. Even the insuranse companys agree as my car insurance doubled when I moved here. People here make right turns from the left turn lanes right in front of you, it is unbelievable!!! I live right by were the accident accured and was right at that intersection 5 minutes prior to the accident. I am so sorry for your loss my heart and prayers go out to her family and friends.
I think they need to put in a traffic light at fort apache/bluediamond. I live right off of bluediamond/fort apache and have seen two fatle accidents in less than a year and guess what? NONE HAD CA PLATES!
I too live in that area. From Durango to Ft Apache on Blue Diamond it turns into one lane and the speeds range from 50 mph to 70 mph. One person pulling out of of El Captitan not correctly judging the eastbound traffic on Blue Diamond will cause the eastbound traveler to swerve and hit anyone in the westbound lane at a high rate of speed. I stopped going that way alltogether because of the craziness.
