Nathan Hardy sits in court awaiting his bail hearing before Justice of the Peace William Jansen on Feb. 5 at the Regional Justice Center. Hardy is accused in a Jan. 29 crash that killed Maria DelCarmen Lewis, 45, and her son, Daniel Santos, 17, a student at Canyon Springs High.

A 20-year-old Las Vegas man accused of running a red light before slamming his pickup truck into a car and killing a mother and son inside has been indicted by a Clark County grand jury.
Nathan Hardy will stand trial on two counts of reckless driving in connection with the deaths of Maria DelCarmen Lewis, 45, and her son, Daniel Santos, who was a 17-year-old student at Canyon Springs High School. They died after a crash at 8:42 p.m. Jan. 29 at the intersection of Lamb and Las Vegas boulevards.
Hardy, whose vehicle was seen running red lights and weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed shortly before the wreck, reportedly told police he was on his way back from St. George, Utah, and was “just in a hurry to get home.”
Police said evidence and witness statements indicate that Lewis’ 2006 Toyota was southbound on Las Vegas Boulevard and entered the intersection on a green light. Police said Hardy’s 1992 Dodge Dakota pickup truck was southbound on Lamb when it entered the intersection on a red light, causing the collision.
Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene; Santos died a short time later at University Medical Center.
Hardy’s attorney previously said his client might have been suffering from a mental health episode at the time of the crash.
Jail records indicate Hardy is no longer in custody. A judge had previously set bail at $50,000. He is set to be arraigned in district court Wednesday morning.
If convicted on both counts, Hardy could face 12 years in prison.

it would be nice to see what the conditions of bail are. Is he allowed to drive?
I do not understand how he could be guilty of killing two people and only face 12 years in prison.
His lawyer's explanation of a "mental health episode" is sickening.
6 years per life...??? Thats' all? That does not seem right.
he is facing 12 years. he will plead guilty and get 6 years. then after he serves 2, he will be granted parole. awesome....
Millions will die of cancer this year. I hope he's one of them.
Running red lites to get home what is the rush.
I bet he was on a cell phone or texting.
scumbag
Mom-Dad? please do not allow your son to skate out of this one...He killed two human beings and needs to accept his responsibility. If you help him, you are just as guilty.
12 years MAX for murdering two people? out in 6 with good behavior? that is pathetic.. this piece of garbage needs at least 25 years.
Well, the prisons are full to the brim of worse people. Would you rather have him on the streets or a rapist, a wanna be "gang-banger", or a murderer? He's only 20, so denying him a full life for an accident that killed two innocent people is hardly justifiable. On the roads of Vegas or any city that's just the price of admission: you may just lose your life. Yes, he should rot in prison as people will say to anyone who takes another life regardless of the cause, but it doesn't work like that. He wasn't drunk like that other chick who killed those two older people in Henderson and he didn't intend on killing these people, he was just stupid. What good is putting him in prison longer going to do anyone??? You can't bring back the dead, so move on. I'm sure he's sorry and for this life that will just have to be enough.
Mental health episode?! Why do people think they can get away with anything these days by blaming it on "mental health issues"
You're a idiot who ran a red light and killed two people! Deal with the consequences. Which should be much more than 12 years in prison.
thekube - Im sorry, but this was no "accident" as you said. And yes denying him a full life because he killed two innocent people IS justifiable. I dont care that hes only 20. Thats plenty old enough to know better. I dont want him or rapists on the streets(worlthless analogy). What about these peoples family and friends? Should they just "move on" as you put it?
Despicable POS.
BOTTOM LINE, DON'T DO THE CRIME IF YOU CAN'T DO THE TIME.
they are going to give this nut case 12 years or so then he will be back out on the streets then what rape, another accident,
Seriously- his analogy is not worthless simple fact is things are and have to be weighted. Prisons are not in unlimited supply. You have to decide who belongs there dangerous and or habitual criminals or idiots. In this case i agree with you, it wasnt an "accident"simply missing one red light by "accident", he ran many red lights speedy disregarding other safety. Unfortunately for this lady and her son they were victims of his what appears to be total disregard for safety.
The writers analogy is not worthless (in this case his opinion appears wrong to me ) Who you put and keep in prison is a fact of life. That is why we see so many real pieces of waste, with no regard for human life on the streets, thet let them out to make room for others, in many cases people who in a sane world would not be using up resources that should be going to keeping dangerous people of the street. China, Russia, we have more people in prison than either of them and almost as many as both combined! We keep the dangerous people away from society.
IMO this guy is a murderer. he knew that he was putting everyone around him at risk while driving like a madman. This guy will most likely go to jail and become a bigger scumbag when he gets out. I foresee another tragedy in this guy's future.
