Blackjack with poorer payouts making headway in Vegas
‘Sometimes it’s OK to have sucker bets if the suckers are enjoying themselves,’ casino consultant says
Harrah’s Entertainment introduced 6-5 blackjack payouts at Harrrah’s Las Vegas about five years ago, and the 6-5 games can be found at all of its properties in Southern Nevada.

The payoff for blackjack has dropped at more Las Vegas tables, but the trade-off is that minimum bets for those games are a little lower.
In recent months, more than two dozen tables paying 6-5 for blackjacks have been added in Las Vegas, in some cases replacing games that paid the traditional 3-2. With the traditional payoff, a blackjack on a bet of $10 wins $15, but with 6-5 odds it wins only $12.
The spread of 6-5 games mirrors the rise of “party pits” — nightclub-themed gambling areas with games dealt by attractive women in revealing outfits. These pits, found near bars and nightclubs, typically feature 6-5 games and appeal to customers for whom gambling isn’t the main attraction.
“The dumbest mammal on the face of the Earth is a man in lust,” says Bill Zender, a table games consultant in Las Vegas.
Twenty-five percent of Strip blackjack games have 6-5 odds, according to Stanford Wong’s Current Blackjack News, a monthly newsletter that tallies the rules and payoffs of individual games in Southern Nevada.
Las Vegas gave birth nearly a decade ago to 6-5 blackjack, the brainchild of casino managers seeking to generate more profit from low-stakes games.
Blackjack aficionados have always decried 6-5, saying it is a ploy to dupe unsuspecting tourists who don’t know the difference.
“So many of the (blackjack) tables have been removed and turned into sucker games,” says Al Rogers, general manager of gambling news publisher Pi Yee Press, which distributes Blackjack News.
The spread of 6-5 games surprises Rogers, who thinks they will sour customers at a time casinos need the business most.
“They’re killing the cash cow instead of milking it,” he says.
The stakes are high for casinos. During the 12 months ended April 30, Strip gamblers wagered nearly $1 billion less on blackjack, and Strip blackjack revenue fell 16 percent, compared with the prior 12-month period, according to the Gaming Control Board. Meanwhile, blackjack is less profitable than it was two decades ago when games were cheaper to play. Strip casinos keep about 10 to 11 percent of blackjack wagers, compared with 13 to 14 percent in the late 1990s.
That’s because people aren’t gambling as much. Longer play time translates into higher casino profits. Although critics of 6-5 games say gamblers are spending their bankrolls more quickly and leaving the tables early, casino managers have a more straightforward explanation: Today’s gamblers, who are fewer in number and have less money to spend, are more distracted by a growing number of nongambling attractions such as nightclubs and pool parties that also cost money.
Zender, a former casino manager and Nevada gaming regulator, says he is advising casino clients to avoid 6-5 games because he thinks they will eventually drive away more business than they generate.
That’s a tough argument to win today, however, as 6-5 games may make as much money as 3-2 games despite getting one-third of the betting action, Zender says.
“This epitomizes some of the greed that’s gone on in the industry,” he says. “These are bad rules, but they can get away with it.”
Although many players don’t understand the difference in payoffs, more are catching on to the 6-5 games, which add 1 percent to the typical house edge of 1.5 percent against novice players, he says.
“Customers are getting less bang for their buck,” which will hurt Las Vegas in comparison with other markets that have not embraced 6-5 games, Zender predicts.
Joe Stormont, 50, drives from Bakersfield, Calif., to Las Vegas up to five times a year to play blackjack and take in other attractions. Yet finding a blackjack game to his liking on the Strip has grown difficult, he says.
“We find ourselves gambling less and less on each visit due to the increasingly tighter games,” Stormont says. “They are not in business to lose, but somehow they managed to do very well in years past with better odds on games and inexpensive food and rooms.”
Stormont says 6-5 blackjack is not the only mistake casinos are making. They have failed to lower minimum bet requirements despite the recession.
Although bets lower than $10 are hard to find on the Strip, minimums are lower than they were during the boom years, industry representatives say. That’s the reason gamblers are seeing more 6-5 blackjack — because with a higher edge, casinos can afford to lower the minimum bets, they say.
Major Las Vegas casinos have too much overhead to be able to afford 3-2 games at low limits of $1 or $5, says Max Rubin, a casino consultant and gambling book author. The low house edge on blackjack, close to break-even for skilled players and 1.5 percent for beginners, isn’t enough to pay the staff and maintenance costs resulting from that casino traffic, he says.
The traditional game — dealt from a single deck and with a 3-2 payoff for blackjacks — became unprofitable for casinos years ago because average players, by reading any number of books and strategy guides, had narrowed the house edge. Single-deck blackjack still exists in Las Vegas, but usually requires higher minimum bets or limits players’ options, such as doubling down.
To boost profit, casinos began replacing single decks with games using automatic shufflers and shoes holding six or more decks of shuffled cards at once. In “shoe games,” which are widespread, cards are dealt face up and gamblers can’t touch them. In most single-deck games, cards are dealt face down and players pick them up and hold them in one hand.
Smaller bettors missed playing single-deck blackjack “because they had been accustomed to handling the cards for decades,” says Gary Thompson, a spokesman for Harrah’s Entertainment.
Las Vegas casinos introduced 6-5 single-deck games in response to player demand for single decks, and they have spread ever since, he says.
Harrah’s introduced 6-5 games about five years ago at Harrah’s Las Vegas. They’re found in all of the company’s local casinos.
The proliferation of such games in the recession indicates players prefer them to higher-limit games with 3-2 payoffs, says Rubin.
Rubin once preached against 6-5 games but now thinks they make sense for some players, especially in the recession.
Gambling for lower stakes stretches playing time, he says. It’s the same concept behind penny slots that are more profitable for casinos in the long run yet enable players to lose money more slowly. Games with 6-5 payoffs can also be less intimidating for novice players who like to chat and drink with other players rather than sit next to serious bettors, who aren’t there to socialize.
The 6-5 games are “great” for tourists getting a feel for blackjack, Rubin says, but a bad move for locals casinos that depend on repeat business from gamblers who seek out the lowest house edge.
“One way to measure value is how much fun people are having,” he says. “Sometimes it’s OK to have sucker bets if the suckers are enjoying themselves.”
Ritch Skorka, strolling down the Strip with a friend this week, didn’t sound too pleased after a reporter informed him that the 6-5 blackjack games he likes have worse payoffs.
“I think people should know that, because that’s false advertising,” Skorka, 57, says. “I’d probably play the game with better odds.”
But the Roseville, Calif., resident changed his mind when presented with a hypothetical choice of wagering $20 on a 3-2 game or $5 on a 6-5 game.
“I’m a pretty conservative gambler,” Skorka says.

did someone need a 4 year course at unlv to come up with this idea. rich people will kill this country, they give NOTHING back as a group. keep worshiping these scum buckets.
Let's face it.. Las Vegas gambling with the Lansky fair shake to players is OVER!! 6/5 BJ, tight server based slot machines, expensive rooms, food, little or no comps.. We are finished! Thanks to the greedy corporate crimminals whom guys like Howard Hughes, Steve Wynn, and Kirk K. opened the doors up to come in here and completely destroy what used to be the most unique, exciting and best party in the world! An absolute tragic shame!!!
environprotector..you are right..it's over for Las Vegas as it used to be..Just look at the clientel they are attracting now..thousands of people walking in 100 degree heat in their Walmart finest trying to find the free squirting fountains or goofy pirate fights dragging their kids and other wheelchair bound relatives with them..Then at night, the tattoo crowd with rivits in their toungs looking for a club to play the out of town slut game..Forget it..As Roy Orbison said "It's Over"...
Environprotector,
What is the significance of a server based slot machine?
It figures the Wal-mart of casinos, Harrah's, introduced this 6/5 crap! LOL
Agreed it over...
Last time I played at Caesar's, they screwwed me by not allowing me to double on a soft 18 versus a dealers break card. Said I could only double on 10 or 11. I had a fifty dollar bet.
I had unknowingly bet a "party pit". Except, I didn't see anything special about it. Nothing on the table said anything about it.
I haven't been to Caesar's or any other Harrah's property since.
They need me and customers like me worse than I need them. It is little wonder to me that they struggle financially.
The irony is that they are the biggest loser.
rich people will kill this country?
haha.
how many jobs has steve wynn given las vegas?
how many jobs have welfare moms given las vegas?
how many jobs do the "rich" people that own this website give las vegas?
oh, and you know WHY they have a lower payout? because no matter how bad they make it, people will still play.
And they wonder why blackjack revenues are down. Just another sign that an MBA is like an advertisement that you are an idiot. I have never played a 6-5 blackjack game, and I never will. Period. Whatever they profit these games bring to them from naive tourists in the short-term will no doubt be exceeded by the business lost from real gamblers, the true "bread and butter" client that carried las Vegas from its inception through the end of the last century, who more and more will start forgoing the trip to rip-off town to get good odds at a casino near their home, and then spend their vacation money going someplace else, instead of getting their gambling and vacation in the same place like they used to for decades...I've long been a cheerleader for the future of vegas, but if anything is going to really do it in, it is going to be the proliferation of 6-5 blackjack and other modifications that will keep the real gamblers away in droves...
stick it to the customers, stick it to the staff, stick it to the families and stick it in their...pocket book, all the while paying the big bosses 10s of millions in salary and bonuses. This is like a retail store demanding a 75% margin on their goods. No deal here. If they are doing this so blatantly on the tables, you can just imagine what is going on with the slots that you cannot really identify. High hold percentages on the tables and slots, expensive drinks at the bar, resort fees, crappy service, what is this a cruise ship with lipstick?
Let the free market sort it out. Don't like the odds? Then don't play there.
Hey Liz, it's amazing how you're just picking on Harrahs. How about mentioning places you've done puff pieces on like the M??
**********Do NOT play Blackjack in Vegas Casinos at all**********
The upper mucky mucks NEVER listen anyway, the end result is that LV is dead, they screwed themselves.
They have been ruining the blackjack in this town for years. 6-5 is only the latest example of it. They don't even fear card counters anymore, the small edge that a card counter could get is gone. They are killing the goose that lays golden eggs.
What about playing the perpetual-shoe?
Most "experienced" players will walk away from those black-box traps -- Yet, you always see the sheeple playing. Same goes for the 6/5...The Casino relies on the thousands that walk off the plane everyday and clueless - what 6/5 or the perpetual-shoe means for your odds.
Just play smart sportsbook and leave the "ring-toss" gypsy tables alone!
I refuse to play at a 6/5 table. When I want to play blackjack, I head downtown to the 4 Queens or to Aliante. They are happy to have your "business" and treat players very well.
Casinos are training employees on what really matters to guests: being greeted within 'x' amount of feet, introducing yourself, and offering additional 'services' in the guise of hyping other ways to spend money on their properties.
Irrelevant guest experiences such as bad odds, unclean rooms, dysfunctional plumbing or air conditioning, slow room service, slower housekeeping, 45 minute check-in times and other manpower related issues are relegated to their proper status by resort management: dead last.
There will be survivors of this economic crisis. They will be the cities and destinations that give tourists a reasonable to great return on their investment.
Cities and destinations with no vision and no foresight, but rather opting for the quick buck, with a rye attitude and a hustler's view of the world, will succumb.
Bye Bye Vegas - it was a nice ride while it lasted.
In time it will all be over..the publicly traded cos have no idea as to how the town was, or should be, its all marketing aholes, and numbers crunchers, the only thing that matters is the stock price. Fancy pools, expensive restaurants, shopping is not what made this town. Gambling made it, and will end it.
ATTENTION Las Vegas Casiono Owners/Executives READ THESE POSTS HERE, THIS IS YOUR BLEAK FUTURE!!!
I love how these arrogant casino managers are attributing the decline in Blackjack revenue to people spending their money on nightclubs and pools. It couldn't possibly be that the customers have caught on to the 6:5 scam and refuse to play along. This is as bad as Murren blaming City Center's reviews on faulty customer expectations, and not on his idea of what we want. They should go back to listening to what the customer wants instead of telling the customer what they want.
Makes ya wonder how long before they institute the same scam at the craps tables
I think it is fine because there are stupid people who will play those games. If there is a customer for it, why not?
I educate all of my guests about 6/5 BJ and steer them away from it on the Strip. Yes we walk the strip and will play some Craps or poker on the strip then go to local or downtown casinos for them to play BJ, slots and other games.
If the MBA types in the casinos want to improve the bottom line then a quick and easy way to do it is CUTTING senior management salary and benefits to levels that match their value to the organization. With a reduction in overhead, you become more profitable and can invest in drawing in more customers.
My 3 favortie places to play Blackjack. The El Cortez, The Western, The Gold Spike. Good drink service and friendly dealers and cocktail servers. Low limit.
First of all, I need to respond to this ridiculous quote:
"Smaller bettors missed playing single-deck blackjack "because they had been accustomed to handling the cards for decades," says Gary Thompson, a spokesman for Harrah's Entertainment."
What a bunch of BS. Typical Harrah's nonsense. The only reason single deck 6/5 was started at Harrah's was because no one in their right mind would play a 6/5 double deck or 6/5 shoe. So they started single deck 6/5 to "justify" the rip off on the 6/5 payout and attract ploppies to their tables. Also, if this is true, why does Harrah's offer 6/5 blackjack on their 6 deck shoes like I saw at Bally's a few weeks ago? I would love to hear Mr. Thompson's comment on that one.
Now for my commentary on this story:
The attitude of Harrah's and MGM (the worst of the 6/5 blackjack offenders) is that most people who come to LV come here 1x-2x a year and are too ignorant to realize what a sucker game 6/5 blackjack really is.
Case in point is the Flamingo (Harrah's). They have a 6/5 "party pit" right by the entrance with the usual half naked female dealers, blasting music, and free drinks flowing like a waterfall. The place is packed with drunk dudes, mostly under 30 with their noses wide open. I have never seen so many people have such a good time, not knowing how ripped off they were getting.
It's just comical to see all these ploppies getting bent over in the 6/5 pit and they don't even know it. Most of these idiots don't even know basic strategy. Combine the 6/5 blackjack payout with bad playing strategy, and you give the casino a 5%-10% house edge. Then throw in over tipping because the dealer is bursting out of her skimpy top... Come on now.
If players continue to plop down at 6/5 blackjack up and down the Strip, then the casinos will continue to offer this nonsense. If people are going to be so stupid and ignorant, and not care what a rip off 6/5 blackjack is, then the game will just continue. It will never go away. The only way casinos will dump 6/5 black is if people refuse to sit down at those tables and send a message to mgt. that this BS will not be tolerated.

chrisdisco; thats what gamblers are into; boycotting the big casinos and playing the places that welcome the old time vegas style of play sends a message to the suits.
Golden Gate on Fremont Street has all 3-2 Blackjack, low table limits, 10x odds on dice, quick drink service and the best shrimp cocktail in Vegas!!
People are going to gamble in the places that gives them the best chance of winning and if that is in a different local then the las vegas casinos will suffer.
dont overestimate the stupidity of people.
The MGM properties will still give you a fair shot.
Believe it or not, Aria at city center is all 3/2 Blackjack.
They have no 6/5 tables there.
'Sometimes it's OK to have sucker bets if the suckers are enjoying themselves,' casino consultant says
They are all sucker bets.
Here's a way for the casinos to boost their profits even further. Pay out 4/5 on a regular winning hand and 5/5 on a blackjack. Those greedy b******s will see this and probably seriously condier it, if they haven't already.
The lack of low limit tables affects the low rollers like me. If I don't like what I see at one place, I simply head down the street to another. From reading these posts, it seems the older places downtown are the best places to play. Harrah's is very fair with their lack of resort fees, so at least we can pick and choose what to do at various locations for the best deal. The party pits are obviously geared to the 20 something drinking crowd (like hard rock pool) and that crowd just wants a "good time" regardless of the cost or odds. I have no problem with the casinos taking every dollar they can from them, just don't look for me in that crowd.
It all comes down to marketing 101 which is "right pricing" -- based upon many variables (i.e. demographics, market conditions, competition, etc.) the objective of ANY business owner, in this case, gaming provider is to ALWAYS implement the "price" which returns the highest profits which isn't easy as associated variables are in a constant state of flux -- while I am not aware of ANYONE who would suggest gamblers willfully participating in 6/5 BJ would be exericing financially prudency, that's why those that do are commonly known as tourists i.e. SUCKERS.
6/5 BJ? -- NEVER!
: {
and u wonder why we have drop in tourism or that no one hit the table or slut. why don't these casino operator put a sign in the front that COME IN SUCKER LOOSE ALL YOUR MONEY. casino operator deserve what they get. a shaft in there back side
slot not slut
Top headline 14% unemployment, next headline worse odds on BJ. Casino's popping up all over the map, everybody needs, wants the REVENUE! Lets go to Vegas where they charge an extra $20 to just enjoy the hotel we are already paying for, and then we can play some tight slots and joke blackjack. Vegas is gone, killed by some MBA punk. Stay home play at your local casino.
What these fools runnin' the casinos nowadays have to realize is if noone wins they'll never come back!
Card counters and win % are why the casinos go 6:5 bjs. Even a higher % when you can only double on 10-11 a 2% game. Also you can up the limits anytime but I doubt very much you convert back to 2:3 bjs I'd like to see where the hold is on these games should be in the 20s
(Full disclosure: I work in middle management for a non Las Vegas casino.)
Jimmyhoofa, you wrote:
"I have never seen so many people have such a good time, not knowing how ripped off they were getting."
Isn't there a glaring contradiction there? People are in Vegas to
a) Win money at blackjack
b) Have a good time
The answer is B. (Right?) If the folks at this table are having such a good time, there's no way they're getting ripped off - they're getting exactly what they're paying for. If these folks are willing to lose an average of 40 cents on their $20 bet instead of 25 cents, in exchange for being dealt to by scantily clad attractive women in an exciting, upbeat pit, then where's the scam?
Think of it another way: this article tells us that 6-5 BJ takes the house advantage up to 2.5%. So if our average 24 year old male player sits down and bets $20 a hand for 2 hours, assuming one hand every minute, then he's going to bet a total of $2400 in that time. On average, he's going to lose 2.5% of that amount wagered, or $60. Sixty dollars for 2 hours of hanging out with fun attractive women, free drinks, good times with his buddies, the highs and lows of gambling - to me, that sounds like a pretty reasonable price. Compare that to two hours of dinner at a nice restaurant, or two hours of buying drinks at a club - 6-5 party pit blackjack looks like a pretty decent option.
As one or two others have mentioned, this isn't focused for everybody. The article says 25% of tables are 6-5, which sounds to me like 75% of the tables are still 3-2. If you aren't willing to pay the extra rake for the party pit experience, sounds to me like there's plenty of options not to.

In over thirty year being a resident of Las Vegas I must admit I was not much of a gambler. I know the house always had the edge. (That's why thye could build these hugh properties). But if I were the casino owners today, I sure as hell would be carefully reading these comments from gamblers who apparently know their business. They had better wise up or I agree, Vegas is on a downward spiral.
this should be telling I had plannned to come to vegas next week but i can do as well at the Indain casinos without the drive and when you are on a budget and you wanna gamble there is no more up side to driving to vegas. So I'm staying at the beach and driving 20 minutes intstead. for a time the indians didnt do it right but those days are gone they are offering loose slot good payout and comps vegas sucks at least as far as gamblin goes..now..i dont know how you make black jack worse but they managed to do it
You can still find 3-2 games and double after split games all over town. What local would play on the strip anyway? By the way, I never got a job from a poor person and poor people do not own casinos.
Hey Rocco
Going to Indian casinos is like shopping at Costco. Pay to play. You put up a house guaranteed take of 50 cents to a dollar before a card is shown. What kind of deal is that? I compare that to one of those sucker side bets. I've been playing this game over 30 years all over the world and this is still the best game in town. By the way, they don't build any of these on winners.
*Run*, I say Run from those 6/5 crooked BJ games and put your money
into something that pays out MUCH BETTER: Wheel of Fortune
I love Wheel of Fortune!!! Back in 1972 I got on a hot streak, put up
$100 and made $110. :)
Jason1717: You are absolutely right on!! What people don't understand is that gambling counts for less than 40% of a Resorts profits. They don't need the gambling revenue as much as they used to when people were looking for a cheap room, a free parking garage, a cheap buffet and a $3.99 special in the coffee shop. Las Vegas has evolved way past that point. People come here to get away from the normal grind and just want to have fun. When unemployment is double what is usually is and people are worried about their jobs, spending money on a good time is less urgent. When people were using there homes as ATM machines thats when these Resorts decided to capture as much of that discretionary spending because it was there. In time people will become more comfortable and spend again.
A few comments
1. Despite Zender's comment that casinos can make 2x the profits with half the action, this isn't the case. Most tourists only have a few hundred bucks. Pure variance wipes almost all of them out regardless of the house edge. The 6/5 payoff just does it more quickly.
2. If players are wiped out more quickly they put less overall money into action and have less frequent winning sessions. More losing players, especially at the beginner level, do not develop into fans of the game and are less likely to frequent casinos not only in Vegas but back home. No matter how high the house advantage is if $0 dollars are wagered the house makes nothing. Newbies are already making enough mistakes to keep blackjack hugely profitable. The 6/5 payoff simply chases away the informed customers who are the ones who will bet serious money year in and year out.
3. The overall mix of games and limits in Vegas is all screwed up right now. The boom is over, it's time to convert those $100 min games to $50 and those $50's to $25. If $3 and $5 games are too low to be profitable raise them up to $10 (with inflation $10 today is like $5 in 1990 and like $3 in $1980. People will play $10 games if you give them value for their money. Overall I'd say there were too many non-gaming oriented bean counters in the kitchen and not enough casino savvy sharps who know how to give a good gamble.
Where's Jack Binion when you need him? Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll buy the Rio from Loveman's Evil Empire.
Remember, too, that when these executives have put all these bad ideas in place and collected their multi-millions in bonuses, they return back east, taking all their millions out of Vegas. Don Marrandino is one example. They care nothing for this town, just what they can get out of it. Their $$$ does not stay here to help the local economy. When push comes to shove, where do you think Gary Loveman is going to spend his millions? It won't be here.
Whine, b**ch, complain, yet people continue to play to play the 6-5...why would they stop it?
Anyone who plays 6/5 blackjack is simply an unsuspecting total idiot. When I see someone playing 6/5 blackjack-I know immediately that they have absolutely no gambling knowledge. NONE. The Casinos that offer 6/5 blackjack are really assuming-incorrectly-that their customers are all idiots. The casinos are NOT increasing profits with 6/5 blackjack. They're actually losing money & also losing good gambling customers. 6/5 blackjack is an insult to any intelligent gambler.
Although I applaud your article for exposing the ripoff of 6:5 blackjack, I have to call into question your time line and accuracy.
"In recent months, more than two dozen tables paying 6-5 for blackjacks have surfaced in Las Vegas, in some cases replacing games that paid the traditional 3-2. With the traditional payoff, a blackjack on a bet of $10 wins $15, but with 6-5 odds it wins only $12."
Recent months? I think not, this blight has been ongoing for the last decade. I challenge you to find "more than a dozen tables" that pay 3-2 instead of the vegas standard 6-5 in any casino. Sorry to tell you this but you are airing ancient laundry. Screwing over the tourist has become the standard. The strip duopoly of mgm and harrah's has assured this. Eliminate the competition and strive for profit.
Las Vegas is no longer about gambling or having a good time, it is about fulfilling corporate spreadsheets, earnings statements, booking shows, occupancy rates, and bleeding off tourists for their money. The corporate handlers lack the intellect and subtlety of the mafia in treating people as something other than cattle.
Why is it that when I try to check into a strip property, before I make it to the registration desk, I am assaulted by time share hawkers, discount show promoters and other refuse that are trying to rip off my money?
I like visiting Las Vegas for the weather, the pools and the nightlife... If I find a good hotel deal I take it. For gambling I stick to the Indian casinos in Washington, Oregon, and California, the odds are better. Gambling in vegas is a waste of time, there are better odds and better service elsewhere
Griephon, the best reply to time share hawkeers or those who say "we have some gifts or show tickets for you" is to simply say "I'm a local". They will immediately move on to the next person walking by.
I don't gamble because I CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE! Simple enough, especially when you live here. There are so many other ways to spend your money in this town. Go to the wonderful spa's or have dinner in a fabulous restaurant! The name ONE ARMED BANDIT didn't start yesterday. On one of those Dicovery shows the guy cuts up things, cuts them in half to find out how they work. He cut up a vintage slot machine, from the 60's or 70's, and inside it was rigged, to NOT STOP ON
7 7 7. I'm sure it came from some Vegas casino.
Of course the slots are rigged ! Is anyone really surprised by that? LOL
Suckers huh? There were no suckers in my day. Casino consultant eh? Did he work for horsford at R&R or did he work with sandoval or rory reids law firm with the aryan brotherhood as backup muscle?
Why don't they just get the politicians to make all of Nevada a brothel since all they want is T&A in the casinos! Take out the games and just ply all the young girls with drinks and have an orgy! This is the mentality of the CEO"s today because they are perverted they think all of America wants to buy into this perversion!
Bakersfield, Thanks for the tip, turning off those idiots is a wonderful idea. Until now, I have engaged them in discussions as to how low their lives have sunk to take such a crappy job. A futile waste of time, but it seems to make them uncomfortable.
Jimmyhoofa, excellent blog, added to my favorites. I have one suggestion, you might want to consider removing the link to the r-v journal. They are going after anybody in attempts to boost their failing revenues.

"I refuse to play at a 6/5 table. When I want to play blackjack, I head downtown to the 4 Queens or to Aliante. They are happy to have your "business" and treat players very well."
Last I checked, Four Queens has been 100% 6/5 tables for well over a year.
Consider that a 6/5 table is significantly better for low limit gamblers than higher table minimums. A $5 bettor playing 6/5 will lose less per hour, on average, than a $25 player at a 3/2 table. If 6/5 tables allow for $5-$10 to be placed on the strip, it's actually a benefit for the player who just wants to make his money last long enough to have an enjoyable vacation. Is the house edge worse for the player? Yes, absolutely. But is it, "criminal, bending the player over the table"? I would argue no, if it keeps betting limits low.
This is the same logic that prevails in roulette, where on the main floor you have low minimum double zero wheels, while in the higher limit rooms you can find single zero. Why don't all the players run to the single zero wheel? Because the higher limit means you lose money faster.
Good point, Nitro, If players feel the casinos are relaxing their odds on table games, then perhaps that feeling will prevail throughout the casino. Conversely, if the player sees the casinos tightening their payouts on table games, the feeling will be that they are tighter on slots as well.
Sorry Peterp to disagree with you.
You said "A $5 bettor playing 6/5 will lose less per hour, on average, than a $25 player at a 3/2 table."
Hate to break it to you, but a $5 bettor playing perfect basic strategy at 6/5 will still lose MORE per hour, on average than a comparable 3/2 game. The House edge at a typical 6/5 single deck game is 1.45%. A typical 3/2 shoe game on the strip at $25 bet levels has a house edge of 0.26%. The $25 bettor loses on average $3.90 per hour and the $5 bettor on a 6/5 single deck loses $4.35 per hour. The $25 bettor also gets better comps.
As a dealer , I can tell you that we lose so many customers when my casino switched from 3-2 pay out to 6-5 pay out. Our tokes have gone south since these numnuts are too greedy. Most of my good customers wont even play BJ anymore. They wont play 6-5 BJ and rather go spend money somewhere else. The worst part is that these idiots management blamed employees because they couldnt fill the empty table games.
The blackjack players I know are now going to the Indian casinos in California. They don't get screwed on blackjack and they spend the rest of their money on food, entertainment and lodging someplace else. While Harrahs is screwing people to the point they no longer want to gamble here I blame the regulators for letting competition slowly die. By the way, Palazzo and Venetian still pay 3:2 blackjack and they pay better odds on proposition craps bets than Harrahs properties. No, I do not work or own stock in Venetian.
What would Jack Binion do? There's your answer.
Part of the problem is when you read these comments some people say "I won't play 6/5 I go play at..." Well some of those places listed such as the Four Queens and the Golden Gate do not offer many, if any, legitimate games. Playing single deck that pays 3/2 on BJ but only allows doubling on 10 or 11 OR a shoe using a continuous shuffler are just as bad as 6/5 BJ. The Golden Gate has become a joke. The only places I'd ever play downtown are the El Cortez, Golden Nugget, Fremont, Cal, or Main Street. All the rest are rip offs & ripoffs don't just come in the name of 6/5 BJ.
$5 black jack loses the casino money anyways regardless of the payout. Freaking stupid casino executives dont even know basic math or they would never have $5 black jack. So I guess thats good for the player.
I stayed on the Strip for years until this 6-5 garbage started. Now I stay downtown at the El Cortez where I can get 3-2 payouts on single deck. They comp me there so I never have to buy a meal and I often get my room free. I only bet 15-50 bucks a hand but they treat me like a king downtown. I only stay there now and blow off the Harrahs joints like they didn't even exist. Last I heard, the Cortez had no financial problems, so they must be doing it right. (Note to El Cortez: What's with making the Vintage and Tower rooms non-smoking? Trying to run us smokers off?)
