Police: No charges against driver, 89, in hit-and-run incident

Authorities say elderly couple possibly didn’t know man was struck; pedestrian blamed

Location of collision

Investigators searching for the hit-and-run driver of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian Saturday night in North Las Vegas say an 89-year-old woman and her husband were in the vehicle.

Police spokesman Tim Bedwell said no charges have been filed because the pedestrian likely was at fault and the elderly couple possibly didn't knowingly leave the scene of the collision.

Authorities said a 52-year-old Las Vegas man was struck and seriously injured about 9:10 p.m. Saturday in the 3400 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard, near Texas Station, by a car that left the scene. First-responders found him with life-threatening injuries in the eastbound lane between Simmons Street and Rancho Drive, police said.

Investigators said Saturday night they were looking for a light blue Hyundai car seen leaving the collision.

On Sunday, the 89-year-old woman and her 90-year-old husband reported to police that their vehicle was damaged by a thrown object the previous night. A family member who saw a news report about the hit-and-run had suspected the couple might have been involved in the collision.

After the family contacted investigators, police determined the couple's 2007 Hyundai Accent was the vehicle involved in the incident, Bedwell said.

Police said the couple felt the impact of the collision, but never saw the pedestrian and thought someone had thrown something at their vehicle. They didn't consider it safe to stop in the area, so they continued home and called police on Sunday, Bedwell said.

Authorities said the couple might not have known they left the scene of a collision and no charges were filed.

"Investigators believe the pedestrian was at fault for the crash as he was crossing Lake Mead Boulevard between crosswalks in a darkened area," Bedwell said in a statement. "Speed, alcohol and drugs are not thought to be factors on the driver’s part."

The pedestrian remained at University Medical Center on Sunday in critical condition, police said.
