Burning towels brought firefighters rushing Friday afternoon to the Stratosphere Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.
The fire, which broke out on the ninth floor of the Las Vegas Strip property at 2000 Las Vegas Blvd. South, created very light smoke on that floor but no other floors, said Timothy R. Szymanski, public education and information officer for Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. The floor was evacuated for about 45 minutes.
No one was injured.
The fire, in the bathroom of a guest room, is believed to have been accidental, the result of careless smoking, fire officials said. The guests had already checked out, and the room was empty at the time, officials said.
Hotel staff were alerted to the fire about 2 p.m. by a smoke alarm system. Security personnel found a few towels on the bathroom floor on fire, filled a waste basket with water and doused the flames, officials said.
Damage was estimated at about $250.

A burning towel??? What logical explanation could there be for that? This story is hilarious....I'm glad nobody got hurt.

What is it with this property and fires?
Who were the guests that checked out ?.....The Camp Fire Girls ?
Stupid crackheads
Then again, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if that dump burned to the ground.
Wonder if a cigarette started that suppose to go out and not start a fire was being used... Yep them tabacco companies are making back all that money they lost by fooling everyone..Must have picked up on that from the government....
I have a nephew who worked some time on a restaurant. He didn't have much experienced but wanted to serve a dish requiring to be set on flames at the customer table.... he set the towel on fire.
Well, he is in Europe working now, so I guess it wasn't him.. but stupid things do happen some times.

Bull you stupid moron! Are you crazy or what? Have contempt for the whole world, right?
It's a landmark that I see everyday. A fine addition to the sklyline. I use it to locate myself many times.
All of the dumps can't close......the fleas need somewhere to gamble. ha!

Security put out the fire. Where were those overpaid firefighters? Oh, that's right were watching football.
it may be run down, but it is a good land mark like a bouie in a lake. i can find my way.
Isn't "careless smoking" redundant? Have any fires been started by careful smoking?
And what's the deal with airline food?
Run down, have you been there recently? Come by and check it out, I will give you a tour ;)
stratboy - I was there a couple of weeks ago. The facilities are ok, but the scene is bad. Let's put it this way......I wouldn't take my wife there for a nice dinner and have her wear her expensive jewelry & dress.
1 - She'd look out of place.
2 - I'd be afraid we would get mugged on the way back to the car.
I was there in the middle of the day and had lunch. My colleague & I were looking over our shoulder ever 2 seconds in that parking garage. You can't park on the level that connects to the casino, so you have to park on other levels and take the elevators or stairs down to the casino. Didn't feel safe at all. I'm not dressing down to go somewhere....I'd rather dress down at the Orleans or Suncoast....and feel safe.
Also, I had a friend stay there 1 month ago from California on one of those cheap $29 deals. He was pi$$ed because with the fees and everything else, it was really closer to $40 per night. He was saying he'd rather stay at the Imperial Palace than at the Strat.....at least at the IP he was in the middle of the action. He said the rooms were comparable....nothing to brag about, old and tired.

I'm thinking they should call it the Crackasphere.
They can advertise the rooms at the low rates, but together with these ridculous resort fees the rooms are not cheap at all. Boyd Gaming and Station Cacsinos seem to have created some sort of an arrangement and keep it going. I am glad that the M removed this pricing strategy. However, instead of charing resort fee, the M has simply raised the daily rates. In other words, the resort fee is still there, but already fully hidden and included in the official rate.
In the end, it all turns out that the customer needs to read the fine print carefully before booking a room at a hotel. Especially if you book through a search engine or travel operator, then it's important to find out whether the rate you get is including all additional fees or not. Read the fine print or call the operator if you have a doubt.
The Fiesta in Henderson for instance, a pretty good middle class hotel if the rate is ok. If you find a rate for 19.95 pls tax, then you will be at about 34 in total, together with the resort fee, which is ok. However, if you see the rate at 29.95 or 34.95 plus all taxes, then it's definetely overpriced. 34.95 usd plus all fees, that's about 55 to 60. Which is way too much for a cheap room such as the Fiesta is offering.
I will check into the Imperial Palace deals upon booking. Might be something for the weekends....
Thanks for that input, greetings from Switzerland
Does anybody know for instance if Armin van Buuren is appearing at the Palms once in a while? I only remember that Paul Oakenfold seems to have his gigs in the club, anybody knows about Armin van Buuren and his a-state-of-trance spectacular?
Sinatra711...the fleas can always hang out at Boulder Station. There are many dogs there that can give the fleas a ride too!.
kenodave - LOL, that was a good one. True.

The Strat needs to go back to the old "Bob Stupak's Vegas World" marketing. Sell 3 or 4 day packages to the low rollers and make bank. It worked for Stupak until they built the tower and tried to go upmarket. Just the drive in and out of the parking structure will scare some away. All the growth has been to the South. Most of don't care to venture North of Sahara. I've been to the Strat a few times, never stayed there. Went there on Nascar weekend because someone at the Sahara Nascar shop told us there was a store there that had what we were looking for. They did. Maybe dropped a quarter or 2 then headed back to the I.P. We also went on opening night of the Stratosphere. Pretty crowded back then. I doubt that I'd ever stay there. The parking garage experience is not good.
Thank you Boris for your typical complaining insight into the "costs of Vegas"...You were able to troll your way into a story that had absolutely nothing to do with your fear of hidden costs, however in your elitist manner you attempted to twist the topic so to support your whining. Seriously, please stay home. Your 5000 dollars dropped in Vegas really won't make a difference either way.
I am coming to Vegas this summer for my annual 7 day stay and the Flamingo is comping me for five nights and $55.00 each for the additional two nights. I think a weeks stay in Vegas for $110.00 plus any taxes is pretty good.
