Police to close Las Vegas Strip at 6:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve

Las Vegas police say they plan to close the Las Vegas Strip to vehicle traffic on New Year's Eve as hundreds of thousands of partiers fill the streets to ring in 2011.

Las Vegas police spokesman Marcus Martin said Tuesday that authorities would reopen the street to cars early Saturday depending on the situation and how many people are out.

The closure will shut down Las Vegas Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night between Sahara Avenue and Russell Road, from the Sahara hotel-casino to Mandalay Bay.

Tourism officials expect more than 300,000 people to visit Las Vegas for the celebration, highlighted by a $500,000 fireworks show from the rooftops of several Sin City resorts.

Highway patrol authorities are expected to close major freeway exits passing the Strip, as well.
