AAA Nevada plans free ‘Tipsy Tow’ service on New Year’s

For those especially festive souls on New Year's Eve, AAA Nevada is offering a free ride home.

The company's Tipsy Tow service will be available from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Saturday -- and no AAA membership is needed, the company said.

Drivers, passengers, party hosts, bartenders and restaurants can call (800) 222-4357 (AAA-HELP) for a free tow home up to 10 miles. Tell the operator: "I need a Tipsy Tow."

The service provides a one-way ride for the driver, vehicle and as many passengers as space allows. No reservations will be accepted, AAA said.

According to an analysis released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the average number of alcohol-related fatalities is 150 percent higher on New Year's Eve compared to the average for the same day of the week during the rest of the holiday season.

And the company reminded drivers that even one or two drinks can impair vision, steering, braking judgment and reaction time.

"If you've been drinking, don't get behind the wheel," AAA spokesman Michael Geeser said in a statement. "Give AAA a call and we'll make sure you get home safely."
