After being temporarily closed due to avalanche work, the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort reopened two chair lifts to the public Wednesday afternoon after receiving the first snowfall of the season.

The resort on Mount Charleston announced today it had an accumulation of 40 inches of snow just during the past three days and 83 inches for the year, said Katie Rose, a resort employee.

The resort was closed until about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday because the chairlift could not operate under such heavy snow, she said.

President and general manager, Kevin Stickelman, said its crews were doing avalanche control work throughout the day and were able to clear roads and parking lots.

“For being as far south as we are… we’ve got one of the better avalanche programs in the whole country,” Stickelman said.

The resort opened back up around 1 p.m. and the turnout was on the low side, Stickelman said, but the resort expects a bigger turnout tomorrow with all three lifts fully operational.

“Tomorrow we’ll be 100 percent open,” Stickelman said. “There’s 83 inches of snow and it’s going to be phenomenal.”

The snow resort will open at 9 a.m. tomorrow. To access the resort by car, snow chains or four-wheel drive is required, Stickelman said. The Ski Bus will be operating on normal schedule throughout the holiday season.
