The Nevada state champion Bishop Gorman High football team is ranked No. 25 nationally in one of the final polls that was released this week.
The Gaels (13-2) finished No. 25 in the Maxpreps.com poll, No. 27 by Rivals.com and No. 31 by ESPN Rise. Gorman beat Reno's McQueen High 40-0 in early December for its third state title in four years, losing only once to a local opponent in its four-year run while posting a 54-4 overall record.
Gorman yielded 80 points in 15 games this fall, winning eight times by shutout.
The two out-of-state schools they lost to both are in the top 10 of several polls. Perennial national powers De La Salle High of Northern California and Hamilton High of Chandler, Ariz., are No. 2 and No. 5, respectively by USA Today.
Gorman couldn't overcome several mistakes and a slow start in a 24-17 loss to Hamilton that opened the season, and the Gaels led 14-7 at halftime against De La Salle before losing by 14 points.
Gorman still is in contention for a sort of national championship. It was one of 64 schools nationwide selected by USA Today to compete in the 'Massey Virtual National Championships.'
The teams, which include 50 state champions and 14 at-large schools, will face off in computer-simulated games that will be programmed by mathematician Ken Massey. Massey's computer models were used to create the BCS rankings for college football in 1999.
The virtual event begins Jan. 4.
