Faith Lutheran football grabs big win against California school

Joe Portaro passed for 296 yards and three touchdowns Friday night to lead the Faith Lutheran football team to a 26-23 victory against visiting Fountain Valley (Calif.).

Portaro’s final touchdown pass, a 22-yard strike to senior tight end Brett Lubbe in the fourth quarter, was the game-winner. Fountain Valley is one of the Orange County area's top programs, but started several underclassman in a rebuilding year, Faith Lutheran coach Jake Kothe said.

The victory equaled Faith Lutheran’s win total from last year, when it struggled with injuries and finished with a 1-8 record.

“Last year with the injuries it was real frustrating for the kids,” Kothe said. “They finally got to enjoy the benefits of their hard work.”

Portaro, who missed most of last year after breaking his hand, completed 24-of-51 passes.

Senior Don Pearson, who has a scholarship offer from Stanford, caught eight passes for 117 yards and had a 21-yard touchdown reception. Lubbe had nine grabs for 110 yards.

Faith Lutheran has a bye next week before opening league play Sept. 11 against defending Northwest Division champion Legacy.
