Metro Police released more details Thursday afternoon about an early morning officer-involved shooting in the eastern valley that sent one man to the hospital.

Metro said Juan Antonio Solis-Diaz, 32, of Las Vegas, is at Sunrise Trauma Center in serious condition after he was shot by an officer while wielding an assault rifle.

Police said officers were called just before 2:30 a.m. for an unknown disturbance in the 2800 block of McLeod Avenue, which is near McLeod’s intersection with Sahara Avenue.

The first police officer to respond stopped a car that was leaving the area. While questioning the driver of the car, the officer heard someone screaming from a nearby residence.

The officer allowed the car to leave the area and approached the residence, taking cover behind an SUV parked in the driveway, police said.

The home’s garage door opened and a man appeared with an assault rifle, authorities said. The officer ordered the man to drop the gun, but he allegedly raised the rifle toward the officer.

The officer fired multiple rounds at the man, striking him several times, police said.

The suspect, identified by police as Solis-Diaz, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and resisting a police officer with a weapon.

The officer involved in the shooting will be identified 48 hours after the incident, per police department policy.
