Samuel Z. Chen, a senior at Clark High School, and Beverly Y. Wang, a senior at The Meadows School, were named Nevada’s 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars, the U.S. Department of Education announced today.

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars annually based on academic success, and excellence in the arts and in technical education, through essays, school evaluations, transcripts and a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.

The program recognized 161 seniors nationwide this year.

More than 5,700 candidates qualified for the award based on their SAT or ACT scores or through nominations made by chief state school officers, YoungArts (formerly the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists), and other partner organizations.

“It is a phenomenal accomplishment for one of our students to be recognized nationally as a U.S. Presidential Scholar, and we proudly celebrate this achievement,” said interim superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell in a statement. “This honor is a testament to Mr. Chen’s hard work and determination, and we congratulate him on this award.”
