Wounded Metro officer’s condition now ‘serious’

A hospital spokesman says a Las Vegas police officer badly wounded in a shootout that left a car theft suspect dead has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

University Medical Center spokesman Rick Plummer said Thursday that Officer Michael Madland is improving following what police say were several surgeries since he was shot March 23.

The 31-year-old Madland suffered a wound to a main artery in his leg. He also was shot in the chest, but was protected by a bulletproof vest.

Madland's partner, Officer Christopher Le Blanc, shot and killed 26-year-old Damon Beal after police say Beal shot Madland during a chase through backyards in northwest Las Vegas.

No date has not been set for a coroner's inquest to make public the police investigation of the shooting.
