- The Injured Police Officers Fund, or IPOF, has set up an account for Madland and his family at Nevada State Bank. The account number is #8243. IPOF assists officers and family members with expenses not covered by insurance in instances of serious line-of-duty injuries or deaths.
A man accused of being in a stolen vehicle shortly before a Metro Police officer was shot by a second man who was running away from the car appeared briefly this morning in Las Vegas Justice Court.
Prosecutors requested an additional day to file formal charges against Marvin Lee Wilson, 45, because the police investigation continues.
Wilson was booked on counts of possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting a police officer, as well as an unrelated petit larceny count, in connection with an incident Tuesday night that left Officer Mike Madland, 31, with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Wilson appeared in front of Justice of the Peace Deborah Lippis, trying to avoid the news media cameras in the room – he either hung his head or held a white piece of paper in front of his face. His left forearm was wrapped in a soft bandage.
He will appear in court again Monday morning.
Madland was shot twice while chasing 26-year-old Damon Beal. One bullet struck his bulletproof vest, which it didn’t penetrate, and the second bullet struck a major artery in his leg.
Beal was shot dead by Madland’s partner.
Police said officers tried to stop a stolen Mercedes Benz at about 8:53 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Antelope Way and Charleston Boulevard. When the vehicle failed to stop for the patrol car’s lights and sirens, officers were granted permission to conduct a Pursuit Immobilization Technique, or PIT, maneuver to stop the vehicle, disabling the Mercedes at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Dolores Drive.
After the Mercedes was stopped, the two men inside – identified as Wilson and Beal – bailed out and took off running, police said. Wilson was caught by officers near the vehicle. Beal, with Madland in pursuit, jumped a wall at a residence on Dolores and fired shots, police said.
A second officer entered the backyard and fired shots at Beal, striking him twice in the head and killing him, police said.
Metro hasn’t yet released the identity of the second officer. Police said Friday Madland was making improvements but remained in critical condition at University Medical Center. He underwent an additional surgery late Thursday afternoon to repair some of the damage to his leg, police said.
Police said Wilson has a criminal history in Clark County including arrests in 2009 for drunken driving, obstructing a police officer and having an open container a vehicle; as well as for no proof of insurance and operating an unregistered vehicle. Past arrests also included drunken driving, possession of stolen property and burglary.
Madland is married and has a 4-year-old son. He joined the department in 2007.

His kids don't kmow who dad is.
Another dirt bag off the street, good job LVMPD!
As the economy worsens, law enforcement is going to have to take a proactive approach to fight crime. That might mean more checks on recent paroles, more checks on "at risk" people, more surveillance in neighborhoods with a prevalence of crime.
More proactive than reactive. I don't see the economy improving one iota, I don't care if the stock markets keep going up...this economy is in the sh*tter, to put it mildly
I hope a jury tosses this piece of drek in the slammer for 50 years.
Death penalty.

nice shot to the head! Bravo!
Come on now, this guy isnt the one who shot a cop. All we know is this guy was riding (not even driving) a stolen car and then tried to run.
Wow Vegas 2009. Way to represent the BEST of your race- intolerance and hatred. Did you hear about the white guy who chopped some lady up for no reason?
Who says im white??
Your all a bunch of sick humans... I'll take dogs over humans any day of the week!
Whoever his partner is, is a great shot to hit Beal twice in the head.
Las Vegas2009 :
Get your head out of the sewer, I'm talking about how dogs are loyal, man's best friend even though man doesn't deserve it!!!!
This poor man is society's fault. If he had been provided free health care his entire life and a real education from teachers paid enough to care he would never have ended up like this. How can you blame a man who society caused to be bad?
You left off "worked his way up to CEO of a retail national chain stores, after dropping his last hit of crystal meth at age 15".
why are u trying to hide your face scumbag. your family and friends must be proud of u
The law used to say "If there is a fatality (one of the Perpetrators) during a crime then all other Perpetrators get the death penalty. However I'm not sure that the law hasn't been change by the pro-criminal elements in the legislature. It used to be a very good way of clearing the criminal element more quickly, two or more at a time.
Dhvencent1:
I appreciate your comment; however, you are not demonstrating any sort of critical thinking at this point. You keep posting comments in all the articles related to this story as if there is some sort of conspiracy. Let's say you are married and you are walking down the street with your wife. All of a sudden, someone approaches you and tells you to give up your wallet; he also has a gun in his hand. You decide you are not going to be a victim and start to wrestle with the subject. While on the ground, he fires a round at your wife striking her and she falls down. At that point you pull out your gun and shoot him in the head and the suspect dies. You did not just commit a crime in any sense. Maybe you could have just wrestled the gun away, but what if he continued to shoot at your wife. He already demonstrated the want to murder her. Are you going to wait to see if he gives up, or are you going to end the threat? In reality, you can even shoot the suspect as soon as he pointed a gun at you. You do not have to wait for him to actually shoot you. Does this make sense? If not, I can try to explain it to you differently. But regardless, let Metro finish their investigation and they will release to the media what really happened. Until then, maybe we should all just stop assuming we know what it is like to be a police officer and to be put in life or death situations daily.
suprise, suprise, another one.

The action and the police law enforcement involvement on the street is over. Now the real test begins to see if the system is really broken, the court system is now on the line.
Let's keep a sharp eye to see where this case is going, how the system works and who is going to benefit from the exposure this case is going to generate.
Remember to keep the faith, keep your gun and they can keep the change.
Just an old cop reflecting,
