Second person is seriously ill with the H1N1 flu, health officials say

Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009 | 11:39 p.m.

A 45-year-old Clark County woman is the 11th person in Southern Nevada to die this year from the H1N1 flu, also known as the swine flu, health officials said today.

The woman, who died in the weekly reporting period ending Sept. 11, had no underlying conditions but could not fight off the flu, the Southern Nevada Health District said. No further information was released about the woman.

Another person, meanwhile, is seriously ill with the H1N1 flu and is being treated at a hospital, the health district said. So far this year, there have been 366 confirmed cases of swine flu in Southern Nevada.

A vaccine against the H1N1 flu is expected to be available in Nevada in October, officials said. Recommendations to protect against getting or spreading influenza include frequent hand washing, covering sneezes and coughs with a sleeve and staying home if fever and a cough develop in adults or children.
