A 9-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries after he was struck on a Las Vegas Strip sidewalk at 7 a.m. today.
The Metro Police Fatal Investigation Unit sent officers this morning to the 3900 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South, across the street from the Mandalay Bay resort, Officer Ramon Denby said.
The boy, of Chula Vista, Calif., and the driver of a dark blue 2007 GMC Yukon were taken to hospitals. The driver, Calvin Nelson, 55, of Las Vegas, complained of pain after the crash, Denby said. He was arrested in connection with the crash and booked into the Clark County jail.
The Yukon was traveling northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard in the far right travel lane, failed to maintain the lane and drifted east, where it struck a curb and traveled onto the east sidewalk, police said. The vehicle continued northbound and struck the pedestrian, authorities said.
The boy was taken to University Medical Center's pediatric trauma unit in critical condition. He was being treated for head and stomach injuries, Denby said
The crash remains under investigation.
Editor's note: Police initially reported that the victim was 10 years old, but later said he was 9 years old. The story has been changed to reflect the correct age.
