Toddler rescued from neighbor’s backyard pool

Updated Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 | 11:55 p.m.

Metro Police and rescuers are crediting a neighbor who knew how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation for saving the life of a 17-month-old girl who was found in a pool Wednesday afternoon.

As Las Vegas Fire Department rescue workers raced to a home near West Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard about 5 p.m., neighbor Timothy Amber had already started CPR on the child.

Firefighters had responded to a call from a woman, who was too hysterical to provide rescuers with any details, about a toddler found in a backyard pool, officials said.

The girl was taken to University Medical Center’s pediatric trauma unit. She was crying and breathing when rescuers arrived, said Metro Police spokesman Bill Cassell.

“It appears that the child is going to make a full recovery,” thanks to the fast-acting neighbor, Cassell said.

Officials are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the near-drowning. They still do not know how the girl got into the pool.
