The Golden Nugget celebrated a milestone Monday for downtown Las Vegas.
The hotel-casino had a grand opening celebration for its Rush Tower, the first new hotel tower to be added to the downtown area since Golden Nugget’s Carson Tower opened in 1989.
Mayor Oscar Goodman and Tilman Fertitta, president, chairman and chief executive of the Golden Nugget’s parent company, Landry’s Restaurants Inc., cut the ribbon in the Rush Tower lobby at a ceremony Monday evening while welcoming the news media, VIPs and Las Vegas notables.
Goodman praised Fertitta for investing in downtown Las Vegas and for his commitment to finishing the project, even through the economic downturn.
“When Tilman came to town, the two of us met and he said, ‘Mayor, I’m going to do for you what I’ve done for other parts of the country where we have our businesses and that is help you revitalize your downtown.’” Goodman said. “A lot of folks come see me in city hall and make promises and, unfortunately, many of them are unkept, but not his promise.”
The Golden Nugget officially welcomed its first guests to the $150 million Rush Tower on Friday. The 25-story, 500-room tower includes four penthouses, 70 junior corner suites and standard rooms that are 20 percent larger than the property’s other standard rooms. Guest rooms range from 439 square feet to one-bedroom parlor suites at 1,326 square feet.
The addition of the Rush Tower brings the Golden Nugget’s room count to 2,414, making the hotel the largest in downtown Las Vegas.
The rooms are designed with a brown, gold and burgundy color scheme. Standard room features include pillow-top mattresses, feather down comforters, 42-inch plasma televisions and marble bathroom fixtures.
Rates at the Rush Tower start at $69 on weekdays through December while weekend rates are between $89 and $129. Rates for New Year’s Eve start at $229.
“Were going to do whatever we have to do to put people in the rooms right now,” Fertitta said. “We want heads in the beds.”
The Rush Tower also features the Chart House, an upscale seafood and steak restaurant owned by Landry’s Restaurants. A 75,000-gallon aquarium with more than 1,000 tropical fish will be the centerpiece of the 200-seat restaurant.
Other additions in the renovation include an expanded casino floor and pool complex, retail offerings and the Rush Tower’s porte cochere, which can be accessed at First Street and Carson Street.
The Rush Tower also brought the addition of more than 100 jobs to the Golden Nugget, Fertitta said.
Landry’s Restaurants Inc. has spent more than $300 million in renovations since the company purchased the property in 2005.
“We are just going to keep tweaking for a while and keep working on things,” Fertitta said. “We love downtown and we’re going to continue doing business down here.”

Where's there's glume there's dume! We all need to start thinking and talking positive! Mr.Fertitta has the confidence in Las Vegas to open a new tower I think other Hotel and Casino owners should follow suit! The rooms look beautiful! I'm sure this like other New Hotels are just a start at the revitalization of Las Vegas! If they would finish projects like the Fountain Bleau and the Eshelon Las Veas would be more spectacular than ever!! The new always makes way for old!
The rooms look just like their other rooms. lol I stayed at the Golden Nugget back in 2008 in one of their suites that looks identical to that room. Let me guess, there are TV's in the mirrors in the bathrooms in that new tower too.
The left cushion on the couch is crooked. I'm just sayin' . . .
YES!!! Keep on building those high-end rooms! I'm looking forward to chillin' beyond my means at a price well within my means. I'll be checking my mailbox for that offer from the Golden Nugget. I'll be waiting for City Center as soon as they come down to Earth and start offering bargain-basement deals. WOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Downtown was fun last week , cant wait to come back in March.
Indiana- traveler
more empty rooms lay waiting for customers who never came, the great recessiondepression had this effect on vegas son, thats why they demolished it all and converted it to the biggest solar engery plant in the world, vegassolar, all the people moved to Obama Box City where they live in boxes under the stars, 10 million people in total moved there from around the USA during 2010/2011, it was greed and stupidity son, i hope your generation does not make the same mistake, now we have the yuan and wing yip is our leader, he is also the leader of asia too.. Europe was not so lucky some power mad guy called Gordon Brown took over and put them all in section 8 houses, took their cars from them and made them slaves for the 50% tax regime to feed his greed and stupidity for selling gold at the lowest price he could.
All because of building too much with no money...

I can't think of anything bad about this property right now, except perhaps the slots could be a little looser, but that being said, they have five dollar limit craps, a very nice swimming pool area, and I guess my only complaint was there was no real good round the clock dining when stayed there a couple of years ago, so there it is..
yes - downtown is much better than the strip - stayed at the plaza and didnt win much but i like it better than those big places
The Golden Nugget has always been the classiest joint Downtown, and this just elevates their reputation some more. And especially at the price point they're hitting, Landry's shouldn't have a hard time filling up Rush Tower.
We usually stay at the Las Vegas Hilton. But, for $69, we'll give the Golden Nugget's new rooms a try.
The Golden Nugget continues to prove that it is still the Caesars Palace of downtown. GREAT JOB!
How come Oscar Goodman goes on radio station kxnt, whose website advertises "Michigan" (saying people should relocate there business to Michigan)...if Oscar is so pro-Vegas???
And shame on this radio station for trying to undermine Nevada business growth by advertising in this manner....
THE COMPANY TREATS THERE EMPLOYEES LIKE GARBAGE ....THATS JUST WHAT I HEAR .....
Very true! Late spring, I believe it was, the GN laid off a bunch of employees - quite a few had over 10 years plus working at the Nugget. And it all came out of the blue - no gossip, no warning just one day BAM!!! All these people lost their jobs.
If I am not mistaken every casino in town laid off a bunch of employees. I don't think this was just an issue at the Golden Nugget.
Can someone else give us another reason why they think they treat thier employees bad?
Rooms look great. Congrats and good luck!
I'm moving to Michigan, the rooms are nicer in Detroit
Wonder if Harry Reid is going to say he saved this project like he claims that se saved City Center. What a joke he is making of our state. It's time for a change!
Las Vegas casino owners' opening rooms nowadays remind me of those women that fill their homes collecting knick-knacks which merely require a lot of additional dusting.
; )
Tomslick i am lmao that was great
Nice rooms. I have heard a lot of praise from friends that have stayed there recently.
They are doing something right
It appears, the Fertittas have been granted many immunities and entitlements, not accustomed to those without their connections.
Since their release from prison, it's heavily rumored that Faraci and Rizzolo are back in the strip club business along with another Crazy Horse Too convicted felon named Al Rapuano (walking behind Rizzolo in this AmericanMafia.com photo by Mike Christ). Faraci at Eden; Rizzolo and his family at Bada Bing; and Rapuano at Penthouse -- three clubs located in the county, two on land owned by the Fertitta family of Station Casinos fame.
The Fertittas proudly attended Rick Rizzolo's welcome home party on April 4, the day he was released from custody, even though Nevada law prohibits unlimited gaming license holders from associating with ex-felons.
Ted Binion lost his gaming license at the Horseshoe because of his relationship with Herb Blitzstein, and Frank Sinatra lost his gaming license at Cal Neva Lodge because of his relationship with Sam Giancana.
But the same gaming enforcement rules no longer seem to apply to the Fertitta family in this new Las Vegas. This family seems to be immune to scrutiny even though they unabashedly associate with guys who rightfully belong in our state's infamous Black Book of persons excluded from entering casinos.

This is Golden Nugget, and wallpapers are real golden, aren't they.
Never had the pleasure of staying at the Golden Nugget. I just wish it was in a better neighborhood.
What is critical is how they financed the new construction. Also, they are competing with the other Casinos in downtown for the visitors who prefer downtown over the strip. They only need to provide a better experience than their downtown competitors. The rooms do not have to the lavish accomodations one would see on the strip. They only need to edge out the downhtown casinos but still provide downtown casino room rates.
Love downtown and what it offers - value and an ever improving infrastructure. These rooms look great. Add on the El Cortez cabana suites and downtown is looking up!
I never understood why anyone would pay $14 for a drink on the Strip when it can be had for $3 downtown.
The new economy = downtown, baby!
Someone please post a comment about the Chart House Seafood place they just opened at the Nugget. Curious to hear how good (or bad) it is..
