Defenseman Deryk Engelland became the eighth former Las Vegas Wranglers player to reach the NHL when he took the ice for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night.

The defending Stanley Cup champions called up the 27-year-old Edmonton native from Wilkes-Barre Scranton to suit up against the Boston Bruins. Engelland saw 19:20 of ice time in the Penguins' 3-0 loss.

Engelland, a sixth round draft pick (No. 194) of the New Jersey Devils in 2000, split his rookie season between Las Vegas and the AHL's Lowell Lock Monsters. He then returned to the Wranglers for the entire 2004-05 campaign.

In 107 games with the Wranglers, Engelland tallied seven goals, 27 assists and 201 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-2, 202-pound defenseman has spent the past two full seasons in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

He is the 417th former ECHL player to make it to the NHL level, joining former Wranglers John Curry, Brent Krahn, Mike McKenna, Adam Pardy, Dany Sabourin, Tyler Sloan and Tyson Strachan.
