County dissolves agency so money can flow elsewhere

Clark County’s Redevelopment Agency no longer exists. Commissioners unanimously approved scrapping the 6-year-old agency today so the millions of tax dollars it collected can go to education, public safety and health care.

Commissioners had talked for months about closing the agency and all that remained was ensuring the $37 million left in its coffers would be redistributed properly.

The county created the agency in 2003 to improve blighted areas designated as redevelopment zones by offering tax abatements and incentives to lure businesses into the zones.

The Clark County School District will receive the biggest chunk – about $12 million for operations and another $2.275 million to pay down debts.

Nearly $7.1 million will go to the county-run University Medical Center. The county fire department will receive $3.5 million and the remaining funds will be divvied up among the Metro Police Department, libraries, townships and other public agencies.

The state of Nevada will get $2.5 million for a Southern Nevada Sustainability Center, a job training program tied to the College of Southern Nevada.

The county has been moving for several months to scuttle the agency as part of a plan to offset an expected $114 million budget deficit.

The agency owned an 18.5-acre parcel that was purchased with the intent to redevelop it. That site, a parking lot at Sahara Avenue and State Street, will be transferred to the county.
