County projects $114 million deficit for upcoming year

The budget hit just keeps coming at the Clark County Government Center.

County commissioners this morning learned that the projected deficit for fiscal 2009-10 is $114 million.

County staffers are suggesting that the county make up $70 million of that this way:

— Keep 400 vacancies unfilled, saving $25.6 million.

— Mothball the county’s redevelopment agency, recouping $5.5 million.

— Delay opening of the low-level offender jail, saving $16 million.

— Change the contract with SEIU union employees, saving $4.9 million. (Union members are to vote on the proposed contract change Friday.)

— Extend those SEIU changes to non-union employees, saving $845,000.

— Defer management raises for the second year in a row, saving $2 million.

— More cost-cutting at University Medical Center: save $500,000 by reducing the contract with the School of Medicine; save $4.7 million by reducing raises for SEIU employees at the hospital; save $900,000 by deferring management raises; save $3.5 million by not filling vacant positions.

That leaves about $45 million that the county still needs to make up.

Commissioners are now quizzing county staff to figure out how where to make those cuts.
