Tuesday, June 30, 2009 | 3:15 p.m.

Clark County School District Superintendent Walt Rulffes is Nevada's superintendent of the year, selected by the Nevada Association of School Administrators.

Rulffes now becomes a candidate for the 2010 national superintendent of the year to be named at the American Association of School Administrators' annual conference scheduled for Feb. 11-13, 2010 in Phoenix.

A three-member committee selected Rulffes because of his impact not only on Clark County, but also on the state of Nevada, said Washoe County School District Superintendent Paul Dugan, president of the state school administrtors.

Rulffes was named Clark County School District superintendent in January 2006. Before that, he shared the superintendent's duties with Augustin Orci. Rulffes' experience with the school district includes serving as deputy superintendent of operations and chief financial officer.

Originally from New York, Rulffes grew up in Washington state. He was superintendent of schools in Spokane and taught at both the University of Montana and Washington State University before coming to Nevada.
