The ultralight plane pilot who died in the crash of the aircraft on Thursday southeast of Las Vegas was a UNLV associate professor in the English department.

Jeffrey Michael Stitt, 57, was also the undergraduate coordinator for UNLV English students, according to a biography posted on the university's Web site.

The ultralight crashed in a dry lake bed about 7:49 a.m. July 16 near Boulder City, according to eyewitnesses and authorities who responded to the crash site. The pilot was the only one on board.

Stitt, of Henderson, was born Sept. 22, 1951 in Pittsburgh. He had lived in Nevada for 29 years.

He specialized in folklore and had taught folklore in Bulgaria as a Senior Fullbright Scholar. In 2006 Stitt was awarded UNLV's College of Liberal Arts Schmeidal Award.

He is survived by his wife, Emire Stitt, and a son, Vesko Dinev.

A memorial service is being planned on Sept. 22, his birthday, at UNLV to celebrate his life. A time has not been scheduled.
