Police release details on 2 toddler drownings in 3 days

Authorities have released additional information about two Las Vegas toddlers, a boy and a girl, who have drowned in three days in backyard swimming pools in the Las Vegas Valley.

The latest was a girl just days before her second birthday, the Clark County Coroner's Office said today. She has been identified as Chrissa Nina Matthews, a spokeswoman for the coroner's office said.

Metro Police and Las Vegas Fire Department paramedics rushed to a residence on Yellow Dawn Court, near Ann Road and Decatur Boulevard, about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Jace Radke, a spokesman for the city of Las Vegas.

The child was not breathing when she was pulled from the pool, Radke said. She was taken to a hospital where she died.

A 2-year-old boy died at another area hospital Monday after he was found in a backyard pool on Sunday, police said.

The coroner's office identified him as Dayne White of Las Vegas.

Metro officers arrived at a residence Sunday in the 6200 block of Newville Avenue, near Flamingo Road and Jones Boulevard, after a 911 caller reported a near drowning, police said.

The family has no criminal record or abuse and neglect history and there is no indication of foul play, police said. Police said it appeared that the child slipped out of sight before getting into the pool.

Police urge families and caregivers to take the following precautions to ensure children are safe around the water:

+ Be aware of a child's whereabouts at all times.

+ Secure doors leading to a pool area.

+ Place barriers and fencing around pool areas.

+ Remove toys and items from the pool when not in use.

+ Secure dog doors, since small children can get to pool areas this way.
