One arrested after unauthorized entry at Nellis

Updated Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009 | 5:06 p.m.

One person is under arrest after an unauthorized vehicle entered Nellis Air Force Base and the driver acted suspiciously. The FBI is investigating, authorities said.

Nellis security personnel locked down all entrances and exits to the base at about 1:40 p.m. today while the investigation unfolded.

A man driving a U-Haul truck sped by security guards at the base's north gate, parking next to the Thunderbird hangar, officials said.

The man sat in the truck and began writing notes, pushing them out the window and suggesting he had an explosive device.

Nellis security, Metro Police and federal law enforcement officials arrested one person between the ages of 25 and 35 years old at about 2:45 p.m. The lockdown was lifted at about 3:30 p.m.

Nellis Commander Col. David Belote said no one was hurt and nothing was discovered inside the vehicle. There were no other persons in the cab or van.

People in the nearby building were evacuated as a precaution. Nellis Air Force Base operations were not interrupted during the lockdown.

Nellis trains fighter pilots from its base about 12 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas.
