Fire Chief Kevin Nicholson coordinated the evacuation of homes along Elm Street at about 1 p.m. after construction crews caused an accidental gas main break.

Boulder City Police evacuated about 12 homes about 1 p.m. today after a gas main break on Elm Street.

Construction crews installing new gas and water lines on the street dug into and broke the 2.5-inch natural gas line, which was about 8 feet underground, Chief Thomas Finn said.

The employee operating the machine that broke the line was undergoing a blood test.

Residents in Moore’s Mobile Home Park and El Dorado Mobile Home Park within a 50-yard radius of the leak were asked to leave their homes because of the gas leak, which can cause asphyxiation or explosions.

Residents were invited to the Parks and Recreation Department gym at 900 Arizona Street.

Southwest Gas was shutting off the line about 1:30 p.m.

Fire Chief Kevin Nicholson said he expected construction to resume later that day, and the natural gas service to be turned back on for homes in the area.
