Credit Union accounts reissued after data breach

Several hundred Boulder Dam Credit Union accounts are being reissued after their numbers were stolen in a national data breach that compromised about 8 million accounts.

Credit union members' identities are not threatened, and the bank is blocking cards and sending new ones on the same day to minimize inconvenience, Eric Estes, executive vice president, said.

Hackers took credit card information from computers of Heartland Payment Systems, which processes card payments and payroll, Estes said. About nine months ago, Heartland said, hackers took numbers of accounts with Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

Estes said though the mistake was Heartland's, the credit union is responsible for $1,000 to $2,000 stolen from members' accounts.

He said the credit union is not currently part of a class-action lawsuit against Heartland.
