An initial appearance and arraignment has been set for a Las Vegas woman charged with driving under the influence and rear-ending a motorcycle Metro Police officer.

The 45-year-old officer, who was identified this evening as William Home, has been with Metro since September 1992 and is currently assigned to Metro's Traffic Bureau. Home was seriously injured and taken to University Medical Center.

Dana Saunders, 34, is charged with DUI with substantial bodily harm after she struck the officer's motorcycle Wednesday night with her 2001 Jeep Cherokee on Sahara Avenue. She was arrested after the accident and booked in the Clark County Detention Center.

This morning, Justice of the Peace Melanie Andress-Tobiasson did not set a bail amount but said the amount could be discussed at Saunder’s initial arraignment, which is set for 7:45 a.m. Monday.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate the Saunders’ Jeep was headed east in the left lane of Sahara Avenue, passing other vehicles as it approached Buffalo Drive, when it ran into the rear of the police motorcycle, Metro reported. The motorcycle was also eastbound, in the left lane, police said. The crash happened about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The wreck is under investigation by Metro’s Accident Investigation Section.
