A motorcycle officer was seriously injured Wednesday night when he was rear-ended by a Jeep driven by a woman who was charged with driving under the influence, Metro Police said.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate the 2001 Jeep Cherokee was headed east in the left lane of Sahara Avenue, passing other vehicles as it approached Buffalo Drive, when it ran into the rear of the police motorcycle, Metro reported. The motorcycle was also eastbound, in the left lane, police said. The crash happened about 8 p.m.

The 45-year-old police officer, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to University Medical Center.

The driver of the Jeep, Dana Saunders, 34, of Las Vegas was charged with DUI with substantial bodily harm and was taken to the county jail, police said.

The wreck is under investigation by Metro’s Accident Investigation Section.
